Dry Eyes can be diagnosed via different tests: such as the Schirmer Strip Test and Meibography.
The Schirmer Strip Test is used to diagnose the deficiency in tear production.
In the Schirmer Strip Test, the ophthalmologist will use two small strips of paper to measure the production of tears created by the eyes.
In this process, the patient is asked to sit with their eyes open, while the strips are gently placed inside their eyes on the lower eyelids. A timer is then put on to mark the duration at which the strips are completely wet.
This test helps us in diagnosing the severity of dry eye syndrome. We also use this test while doing a Pre-LASIK Evaluation.
Meibography is the visualization of the Meibomian Glands to diagnose the lipid layer deficiency which causes Evaporative Dry Eye.
The Meibomian Glands are located in the eyelids of a person. They are responsible for producing oil which helps retain the tear production of the eye. Infrared light is used in meibography to capture the images of the glands.
During a meibography, the ophthalmologist can get a detailed study of the Meibomian glands including the shape, dimensions, structure.
It helps us see and understand the level of functionality of the glands. This is a non-invasive imaging technique.
